FIFA 2010 South Africa Photographers Blog by Matthew Ashton at AMA Sports Agency

I don't normally feature work by other photographers, but I could not resist to spread the online word about this fantastic, in depth blog written daily by sports photographer Matthew Ashton. He is covering the World Cup for his local and international picture buying clients.

If you are a football fan, sports fan, photographer, amatuer or just someone looking for a good read about the game I promise there will be something for each of you. For equipment junkies this site is not for you. Matthew's words are insightful about the life of a sports photographer and the stories of the game you don't hear by the worlds media outlets.

FIFA 2010 South Africa World Cup Photographer Blog - Matthew Ashton, AMA.

Check out the 'Blog Directory' to read stories on his iconic photographs, daily posts on the games and lots more.

At this point, as a freelancer and photographer I too would like to back up the words Matthew has written in this extract below. Dont steal anything on his or any other creative artists website.

"Please note : Our website is for B2B clients only. That means only true professional picture buyers. Although it is flattering people stealing our pictures and publishing them elsewhere, this does not pay the bills"

Finally, there are many photographers who continue to work hard to take the next steps on their way to succeeding in something they wish for. I wanted to quote Matthew's way, his story. For many other photographers, their story is different but reading this was inspiring and I hope it inspires you.

"I often get asked how do you get into Photography? Or especially Sports Photography.
Well, it is certainly unlike going into law. There is no route. You don’t go to uni, get a job and that’s it! You do it your own way.

There are no qualifications to achieve, only to learn the language of photography. There are no rules. There are no real requirements apart from the obvious one of taking pictures as a skill – but you have to learn to BE a photographer. I often relate my job to that of an interpreter in that to get a job you have to know the language before hand and equally remind people who, although they can drive, do they really see themselves as a rally driver? It is still one of the professions where I believe you need to be the office junior, serve an apprenticeship to kill the glamour of it all. Even in the 80′s for every hour spent flying in a helicopter, you would spend 14 hours in a darkroom printing the pictures.

I’ll retell some stories about playing mind games, how to impress a picture editor and how to get your foot in the door some other time.

Previously all I wanted to do was work in TV but my path changed.

I followed my passion for following football and the picture frame with a group of Scotsmen writing a lifelong soundtrack in the background.

I still want to fly helicopters but everyone has their own route, their own tale.

This was mine."

Middlesex v Somerset FP T20

Kieron Pollard was the man of the night hitting a fantastic 89 not out off 45 deliveries at Lords. As a result, Somerset won by 5 wickets with the crowd being thoroughly entertained by Pollards seven 6's and seven 4's. This was T20 cricket at its best with fast bowling, big hitting and quick running action.

Photographs of Middlesex v Somerset are available to view here.

FA Trophy Final - Stevenage 1 v Barrow 2

Saturday 8th May 2010. The FA Trophy cup final between Stevenage and Barrow.

It was a fantastic day out for the fans to Wembley having secured the all important promotion into the Football League next season. Stevenage took the lead in the first ten minutes however luck was not on their side with Yemi missing out on a clear penalty opportunity late into the second half to try and secure the important winner (see photograph above).

Instead, extra time was needed to see Barrow's local lad Jason Walker score the crucial winner on 107 minutes.

For a full Stevenage Borough match report please see here

Photographs from the game are available to view at my usual football collections section of the website here
